Polycarp of Smyrna

Polycarp of Smyrna was a 2nd-century Christian bishop, theologian, and martyr. A disciple of the Apostle John, he served as a crucial link between the apostolic era and later Christianity. Known for his firm defense of orthodox doctrine, Polycarp opposed early heresies like Gnosticism. Around 155 AD, he was arrested and burned at the stake for refusing to renounce his faith, famously declaring, “Eighty-six years I have served Him.” His martyrdom is one of the earliest recorded and inspired generations of Christians. Polycarp’s legacy lives on through his letters and his steadfast example of faith and courage.
