Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) was a prominent American theologian, preacher, and philosopher during the First Great Awakening. Known for his powerful sermons, especially Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, he emphasized God’s sovereignty, human sinfulness, and the need for personal conversion. A leader in the revivalist movement, Edwards blended Calvinist theology with vivid imagery to stir emotional religious experiences. He also contributed significantly to early American philosophy, particularly in metaphysics and religious thought. Edwards later became president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) but died shortly after taking the role. His legacy remains influential in evangelical Christianity.

He that has doctrinal knowledge and speculation only, without affection, never is engaged in the business of religion.
