Joan of Arc, born in 1412 in Domrémy, France, was a peasant girl who claimed Divine guidance to support Charles VII during the Hundred Years’ War. At just 17, she led French troops to several important victories against the English, most notably lifting the siege of Orléans in 1429. Captured by the Burgundians, she was handed to the English, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake in 1431 at age 19. In 1920, the Catholic Church canonized her as a saint. Joan remains a national heroine of France and a symbol of courage, faith, and resistance against oppression.
